Join artist and instructor Mike Henry for an intensive two-day color theory workshop tailored to serious art students aiming to enhance their painting techniques. With Henry's expertise in utilizing a limited palette and mastering light in compositions, participants are in for an enlightening learning experience.
Across two six-hour sessions, students will delve into various aspects of color theory, drawing from Henry's extensive knowledge gained during his tenure as an assistant to renowned artist Stephen Quiller, the inventor of the Quiller Color Wheel. Students will be using M. Graham paints and Arches140 lb. rough bright white watercolor paper. All supplies are included.
In this weekend retreat you will:
· Master the mixing of grays from complementary colors from around the color wheel on the palette and paper. Show the transition from warm to cool gray.
· Through hands-on exercises, you’ll experiment with various triads to create nuanced grays and then on paper show gradations of color and temperature.
· Using “near” complementary color schemes.
· Blend semi-neutrals from 2 non-complementary colors.
· Do exercises aimed at matching paint swatches of semi-neutral tube paint using different combinations of pure hue colors. As an example, there are numerous ways to make burnt sienna without using any burnt sienna.
· Unravel the complexities of mixing black hues using pure hue colors, exploring warm and cool black tones.
· Refine your skills by creating semi-neutral shapes surrounded by dark values of diverse temperatures, a lesson in adding depth and dimension.
· Do a color harmony "Pie piece" exercise that will challenge you to craft small watercolor paintings depicting scenes in both warm and cool tones using a segment of the color wheel.
· Delve into granulating and staining watercolors.
· Experiment with different techniques to make gray such as charging in paint and glazing.
· Tackle the challenge of mixing realistic greens, crucial for landscape painting enthusiasts.
· Using greens and reds effectively.
The retreat package includes continental breakfast at the studio, and lunch at the historic Little Bar of Marine City. Additionally, participants planning on staying for the weekend can enjoy a 10% discount on accommodations at the Inn on Water Street. Contact Jeanne at New Century to get the code to book a room.
