Marine City commissioners recently discussed the logistics of an art display that New Century Art Gallery owners Jeanne Burris-Johnson and Cory Johnson want to bring to the city’s historic city hall at 300 Broadway St.
The art display would include moving walls that would be installed in the area of 300 Broadway St. that was formerly River Rec Teen Zone. The display has the aim of “enhancing the artistic atmosphere, providing a platform for local artists to showcase their work and offer the community the ability to have display walls for many possible programs and events,” Burris-Johnson wrote in a letter to the 300 Broadway Committee included in the commission’s March 21 agenda packet.
The proposed design for the walls is 4 feet wide, 8 feet tall and 5 inches deep, with a base resting on a 2-foot-by-1-foot platform mounted on wheels. The walls would slide in or out of the base for easy storage....

New Century Art Gallery asked artist Mike Henry, " Who are some contemporaries or figures in art history who have influenced you?
"I, like many artists, have contemporaries that I follow, and have had an impact on my life and work. Most of these artists I have followed from a distance, and one I have had the good fortune of following up close.
One that I'll mention first is John Lovett. As a brand new watercolor painter I found his book: "Watercolor for the Fun of It - Getting Started." The cover caught my attention, and after quickly perusing the book, I took it home and it became my introduction to watercolor. He is a master at orchestrating soft, loose areas and tight, realistic areas on the picture plane. It would be 15 years after I started painting that I would meet him and attend one of his workshops. This soft-speaking Australian painter has a teacher's heart and showed me that this business of painting can be "fun" and reminded me that there always possibilities beyond what I see on my present painting.
Speaking of possibilities, I am writing this from the home of Stephen Quiller. In the early 2000's, I purchased his book: "The Painter's Guide To Color," because I wanted to learn more about color. A few years later I would take a workshop from him, and he asked me if I would be interested in working as his assistant for his August workshops in Creede, Colorado. That was over 15 years ago, and has given me the privilege of being an eyewitness to over 30 Quiller workshops, plus a lot of one-on-one time with Steve.
The lessons from spending time with a living master are endless. I am now very interested in the subtle nuances of color and how to use them. I have become a "noticer" of those shifts in nature, and choose to push them when I'm in my studio, when necessary. I have always loved using a limited palette, but with my time spent with Steve, and viewing his paintings over the years, I am pushing past the "limits" that I thought I had."
-Mike Henry

About the artist:
I've been a potter for about 30 years, fulltime as my professional job for 19 years. My work consists of functional and decorative stoneware and porcelain. I have taught classes and workshops in my own studio and outside studios for about 28 years. I was the children's clay instructor and studio co-manager at the St. Clair Art association for 13 of those years. This is not only my profession but also a labor of love, sharing, and community. I hope to bring that positive energy to the space I'm in.

We are excited to announce that New Century Art Gallery in Marine City has received a $25,000 Enhancement Grant from the Backing Small Businesses program presented by @AmericanExpress, in partnership with @Main Street America. We were among the 350 Backing Small Businesses grantees awarded $5,000 earlier this year, and now have been selected among 25 of the original grantees for an additional enhancement grant that will help us address cultural, environmental, or access needs in our community. We are so excited to be among the recipients of this program!
For New Century Art Gallery, this grant will help us continue to build our business and create opportunities for artists in the St Clair County area. Some of the many plans we have include adding to our classes, continuing community programs like our Veteran’s classes or talks, having another Marine City Art Drift, and working with other businesses and the City of Marine City to build more opportunity for our art community.
New Century Art Gallery is pleased to support the Blue Water Art Association with a page dedicated to this historic club! Find out club events, contact information, featured artists, and much more!
